Dungeshwari Cave in the Pragbodhi Hills or Mahakala Cave

The cave in the obvious hills close to Bodhgaya is where Buddha is said to have spent six or seven years as an ascetic before meditating below the Bodhi Tree. In the process, he almost starved to death and then later realized that self- abasement is not the correct way to enlightenment.

Now there isn’t much to be seen here except a small golden Buddha statue. However, the trip here and the view from the top is nice.

It’s at a distance of 20km towards the east, across the Fagu River. Rickshaws offer 3-hour return trips there or you get yourself a motorbike. Some people also walk there but do consider this only during clear not too hot weather.

1. Dhauli Shanti Stupa

Stupas in general as you know are one of the most recognized forms of Buddhist architecture. If you’re wondering what is the relevance of the Stupa here and its significance. Here’s the shortest history lesson on it:

A King named Ashoka during his reign in this state realized the intensity of war when the river Daya had turned red with blood. This horrific bloody river scene finally struck his senses and made him conscious of the cruelty of war. He then took up the path of peace and tranquility by choosing Buddhism.

This Shanti Stupa stands as testimony to his change of heart as he laid down his weapons and turned to spread the teachings of Buddhism. The overall structure of the stupa is beautiful in white with depictions of war on it while the peaceful Buddha maintains posture. Its white peaceful presence marks the importance of peace for future generations.

3. Day Trip To Konark Sun Temple

This iconic temple shows how simple the surroundings of stone were brought to life. This standing structure also proves that this state has always had an artistic spirit ingrained from centuries ago. The Konark Sun Temple is also a UNESCO World Heritage site.

There are guides who sell pamphlets related to the history of the structure. If you would like to use the guide service at the site, the cost is approx. INR 200. Something that you shouldn’t miss here is the light and sound show which is a great attempt to recreate the history of this temple. The light & sound show is closed on Mondays

4. 64 Yoginis Temple/ Chausath Yogini Temple

This temple is dedicated to a female deity who was courageous enough to defeat a demon single-handedly. Instead of calling out to a male form for aid like most of the fairytales we’ve heard, the Goddess Durga herself took on 64 forms to defeat the demon. The pundit (i.e. priest) at the temple will give you a detailed description of all her 64 transformations in English and it’s pretty fascinating to know this tale although mythical in nature.

I would suggest keeping some cash ready to offer as respect to the priest who uses it to buy the necessary devotional items for the deity. Approx INR 50 – INR 100 is sufficient. This donation is of course not compulsory.

5. Day Trip To Jagannath Temple

The Jagannath Temple in puri, particular, holds a very special place to a Hindu devotee. Most Hindus in the whole country believe that visiting this site will help them achieve ‘moksha’ which means eternal salvation. Jagannath is one of the 4 most holy pilgrimage sites in India.

The street to the temple is flooded with devotees all waiting in line to enter and offer their prayers. There is the continuous movement of people, a repeated rhythmic religious sound in the background and it feels like things never come to a standstill here. The entire picture makes you think of Karl Marx’s most celebrated dictum ‘Religion is the opium of the masses’

Foreigners are forbidden from entering the temple. However, you can easily get a clear view of the outside of the temple from Raghunandan Library. You can make a small donation to the library.

Raghurajpur – Meet the artist behind the Art!

In Raghurajpur, you can finally meet the faces behind the art that have been showcased in Orissa. This is a small village where families practice the same tradition for years. They are now recognized for dedicating their lives only to create art forms such as palm leaf engraving, tribal arts, silk painting, and so on.

The intricate details on the artworks are extremely impressive! Just a little heads up that some shopkeepers at the start of the village can be very persistent. Hence, we’d suggest taking your time in the village, moving further down the road to see more shops before you buy anything. One shop that we loved and found reasonably priced is – Bishnukinkar Mohapatra’s shop. Your driver can help you locate this shop.

Chilika Lake

This lake is famous for its rich biodiversity of bird species. You can take a boat ride from Mangalajodi Point to bask in the midst of the rich flora fauna while you’re on the lake. As you are accompanied by a guide you also learn the names of the wide variety of birds you’ll see.

Winters are the best time to see migratory birds. The boat facilities here are good and the guides, as well as staff at the counter, will assist in booking a boat for a reasonable amount. I’d suggest the early morning is the best time for this.

From the Satapada entry point of the same Lake, you can spot Dolphins. Dolphin watching is also quite popular among locals hence much more touristy. we’d recommend doing either one.

Most of the travelers visit Ahmedabad simply because of this Ashrama. It is here where India’s famous freedom fighter and a well-known figure internationally as a promoter of non- violence, Gandhi, stayed.

It is said that he chose this particular spot because on one side you had the jail and the other side the cemetery and any nonviolent fighter would end up in either one of these places. This is now a very peaceful ashram.

You also get an in-depth knowledge of his life as there is a library here. It tells you more about his teachings and gives you a better understanding of the revolutionary movements during India’s Independence.

Just like how the Taj Mahal has a tragic and romantic story behind it, Adalaj Stepwell too has quite the drama. It is said that the king (Rana Veer) was killed in a fight by his enemy(Begada).  Afterwhich, Begada fell in love with the king’s wife. However, the king’s wife agreed to marry him only if he completed the stepwell her husband was building.

The lover that Begada was, he agreed to do so, only to find that after the completion of this the queen committed suicide at the stepwell to avoid the marriage. Besides the tragic story, what makes the visit so interesting is the architecture, from the Hindu – Islamic styles used and the intricacy in the carvings.

This stepwell will have you marveling at the monument as soon as you enter the premises. Make sure to be here as early as possible to beat the crowds. This is just going to be the beginning of many more interesting yet beautiful structures that you will come across.

No matter how rushed your schedule is, make sure you make time for this beautiful mosque. It will definitely make you feel like your travel to India was worth it! Built by Sidi Saiyyed in 1573, the work done on this mosque is undoubtedly out of this world.

The Indo Islamic form of architecture with its domes, arches, and famous 8 windows with latticework will captivate you. The most famous window is the ‘Tree Of Life’, the jali work done here is so detailed you will not help but continue gazing at this particular window. Considering the noise and traffic outside starting at this window will definitely give you some inner peace. Located about 100 kms away from Ahmedabad, make a stop here if you wish to get amazed by the art, culture, and craftsmanship of the people in the past. The Sun Temple was built in the 11th century by King Bhimdeva, dedicated  to the Sun God.

This complex is divided into 3 parts: the Surya Kund (stepwell), Saba Madapa, and Guda Mahdapa. All the three structures will have you gazing at the craftsmanship, the symmetrical patterns, the god and goddess carved on the walls of these pillars.

Even the ceilings of these structures were not left behind; they are covered with beautiful floral motifs. You notice the hard work, dedication, and effort that would have gone into building something like this during that time.

  • Dada Hari Vav – Another beautiful stepwell of Gujarat is the Dada Hari Vav, which is just a ten-minute drive from the Julta Minar. This is over 500 years old and it’s beauty here is unmatched to any other current-day structure. This is 4 storeyed vav (well) that has scriptures in Sanskrit and Arabic engraved on the walls.

There are various rumors regarding the construction of these Rathas. However, it was believed these were just prototypes for other temples, that were to be built in the rest of Tamil Nadu.

Moving Around in Udaipur

Conveniently, a lot of sightseeing spots can be visited by foot in the central part of the city. The narrow alleys can make it rather difficult, for a car/auto-rickshaw to easily pass through. However, to visit sites further away from the old city, one has minimal, yet reliable options available.

Auto Rickshaws

If you arrive in Udaipur via train, you can easily get an auto-rickshaw outside the railway station.

The fare is not calculated automatically by a metre, you must settle on a reasonable amount before the ride. It should cost you about INR 100-150 and take about 10-20 mins to reach your accommodation.

Similarly, you can easily hire an auto rickshaw INR 500-600 a day for sightseeing. Make sure you haggle the price beforehand, as drivers can overcharge foreign tourists and take you for a ride (in the literal sense too!)

Taxi

You can ask your accommodation to organize a car and driver service for sightseeing! You can also take day-trips to Kumbhalgarh Fort, Chittorgarh or Ranakpur Temples. This will cost you INR 3500 onwards for a small car.

Motorcycle/Scooter/Bicycle

Exploring the old city on a scooter or a motorcycle has become very popular. There are numerous shops renting out motorcycles and scooters for the cost of INR 500-800 a day.

This does not including fuel costs, and a deposit ranging between INR 200-500 depending on the vehicle and vendor. You will need to show your passport and driver’s licence as proof of identification.

Unfortunately, bicycles are not as easily available but you may find a spare one in a renting store for about INR 100-200.

A mile away from the Ka[aleeshwarar temple comes The San Thome Cathedral, India is known for its diversity and this further endorses this idea. A special characteristic of San Thome Cathedral is it is one of the only 3 churches in the world to be built over the tomb of an Apostle of Jesus.

St Thomas was the apostle that landed in Chennai at around 52 AD and stayed here till he passed away. There is a tomb and a fragment of his figure that is kept here as a relic. Now even if you are not too interested in spirituality, we would still highly recommend visiting this church, for the simple reason of its architecture.
