Apni Dhani Eco-Lodge Nawalgarh

This charming little hotel in the heart of Rajasthan’s Shekhawati region. It sure punches above its weight when it comes to being ecologically responsible! They aren’t just paying lip service when they call themselves an ‘eco-lodge’. Renewable energy sources, locally-sourced building and decoration material, and an organic vegetable garden are all part of the program.

An NGO does the sourcing of hand-made paper which is produced from waste textile fibres. This is what they use to make their printed material. The staff is well-versed in ecologically forward practices. And they guide guests on how to be a more responsible traveller.

In fact, Apni Dhani also opens its doors to locals who want to learn more about sustainability and renewable energy! On top of all of that, it’s an absolutely great place to stay.

Chhotaram Prajapat’s Homestay, Jodhpur

This homestay is in the village of Salawas, which is on the fringes of Jodhpur city. It embraces the traditional Rajasthani way of life in all aspects and is quite eco friendly. You stay in huts that are made following age-old practices from the region. They trap the heat in the winters and stay cool through the harsh summer months.

The meals consist of Rajasthani delicacies, using ingredients commonly found and consumed in the region for its preparation. There’s an emphasis in all their excursions on being sensitive and aware. The owners offer safaris and treks to the areas surrounding the homestays. Ensuring that there are no negative impacts on the environment or the communities that are visited.

Chandelao Garh, Jodhpur

Chandelao Garh is the place to go to experience a slice of life in a Rajasthani village. It is located about 40 kms outside Jodhpur. This ancestral home in Chandelao village embraces the traditional way of life. The hotel is well-appointed and comfortable. But don’t expect to veg out in front of a TV all day!

Chandelao Garh runs Sunder Rang. This is a project that aims to create a sustainable income source for the women of the village. Accordingly, it also supports local crafts. The women create high-quality textiles and handicrafts using traditional Rajasthani techniques and patterns. They use this in clothing and accessories, home décor and knick-knacks. All these are displayed in the ‘Jhopadi’ which is a hut.

Bamboo Retreat Gangtok

The International Ecotourism Society defines ecotourism as “Responsible travel to natural areas, which conserves the environment and sustains the well-being of local people”. This is what the folks behind Bamboo Retreat also strive for. Accordingly, they segregate and recycle all their waste. They also compost the organic waste for use in the organic garden.

Their main focus is to use renewable and eco-friendly resources. You can also see this in their décor as well. They try and source locally as much as they can. The 12 rooms here are designed keeping Feng-Shui’s directives in mind and all are also colour-themed. Their staff is extremely warm and is regularly trained on best practices. The Bamboo Retreat runs workshops for both locals and interested visitors.

Coconut Lagoon Kumarakom

It’s refreshing to see larger resorts embracing responsible tourism, and Coconut Lagoon does it wholeheartedly. Coconut Lagoon is a part of the CGH Earth chain of hotels. For construction, they use material from dismantled homes in the surrounding villages. This is a way of preserving this ancient school of thought.

In order to provide sustainable employment, they always put jobs opportunities first in the local communities. And, they do their bit on the environmental front, too. They’re always finding inventive ways to reuse any plastic waste generated. And, they also compost the wet waste.

Coconut Lagoon even rears Vechoor cows, a rare breed that’s in threat of dying out. You can often see them wandering and feeding on the lush green grassy lawns!

Dune Eco Village & Spa, Pondicherry

This sprawling resort embraces both organic living and holistic well-being. It is located along the beach outside Pondicherry. The focus is on an alternative approach to life. “Eating healthy and feeding your mind as well”.

Apart from standard rooms, you will find a range of eco-bungalows, constructed of casuarina trees with coconut palm leaf roofs. There’s an impressive 7-acre organic farm onsite. This is where all the fresh ingredients that make it into the meals are sourced. Even the flowers that decorate your rooms are grown here.

Bansi Homestay, Agra

Bansi Homestay feels like an oasis of calm far removed from Agra’s bustle, even though it’s only an easy, 15-minute walk away from the city’s star attraction, the Taj Mahal.

Rooms are comfortable, and have lovely rain showers – all the better to wash Agra’s grit off! We really like that the owners use solar heaters for the water, and the home-style vegetarian food (available on request) is another big plus!

If not for the convenience of the distance to the Taj, then for the comfort feel – this makes it to the list of best homestays in North India.

Devra Udaipur

Rajasthan’s lake city is full to bursting with hotels, guesthouses and homestays. One of our favourites in Udaipur is Devra, located just far enough from the city centre to offer a sense of the countryside. Run by Major Durga Das and his charming wife, Jyoti, this 10-room property is really special. The rooms are a perfect balance of modern comforts and old world heritage. Plus there are loads of little nooks and corners that you’ll want to curl up with a book in. There are some nice walks around – talk to the warm owners, and they’ll point you in the right direction! And don’t miss sampling their traditional Rajasthani meals; rich and ghee-laden and bursting with flavour.

Aashray Homestay, Varanasi

Exploring Varanasi can be an overwhelming experience. Which is why we love retreating to the tranquil environs of Aashray Homestay whenever we’re in that holy city. An escape from the onslaught on your senses, it is a definitely among the best homestays in North India.

The owners, Mr and Mrs Kapur are passionate about Varanasi and its history and have created a charming space in a quiet neighbourhood that’s the perfect antidote to the chaotic ghats.

The rooms are cosy and welcoming, with quaint antique accents. And Mrs Kapur’s cooking will have you returning, night after night!

None of the guest rooms are alike, each with its own bursts of colours, and full of artwork and lovely furnishings. The owners are working to minimise Sunnymead’s carbon footprint and their use of local produce is just the cherry on top. This makes it among the best homestays in North India!

All Seasons Homestay, Jaipur

There were a few better options than All Seasons Homestay if you’re looking for a ‘home away from home’ experience in Jaipur. However, following renovations in 2016, this homestay has upped its game.

Each room is uniquely themed, and most have private balconies attached. There are also two gardens to unwind in. And a common living area should you feel like socialising with the hosts or your fellow guests. Need more incentive? All Seasons Homestay also offers home-cooked meals (both vegetarian and non-vegetarian), as well as meditation and yoga sessions on request!

Life Tree Bed and Breakfast, Delhi

Running Bed and Breakfasts seems to run in this family’s blood! LifeTree is owned by the parents of the brains behind Tree of Life and is another great option in Delhi.

There are four large bedrooms (each with an attached bath) in this bungalow, and the loving ‘house mother’ Mrs. KantaBazaz-Manocha is always around should you need any sort of assistance.

Dia, Pushkar

This private home-turned-Bed and Breakfast offers a different take on the holy city of Pushkar. The five, airy rooms are all charming in their own ways, with plenty of natural light and gorgeous furnishings.

Our Favourite Homestays In India

There is a saying in India, ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ which literally translates into ‘Guest is God’. That is exactly the kind of service and thought process that goes into many homestays in India. Anytime you walk into an Indian family home be expected to be treated extremely well. The homestays in India range from Royal palaces to lovely bungalows and even small two-bedroom apartments in cities.

We at India Someday highly recommend homestays because they just enrich your experience of the city. You not only get a local’s perspective on the city but delicious home-cooked food along with it.

We began India Someday with helping people travel to India. However, when we started, never did we once think that we would come across such a lovely bed and breakfasts and homestays. After 6 years of running the company and having sent 3000+ people to different homestays in the country, we have tried to make a shortlist of some of our favourite homestays in India.

Jaipur Friendly Villa – Jaipur

Run by a lovely couple, the Mehra’s, this quaint home is tucked away in a quiet residential part of Jaipur. This is a cosy accommodation which comes with perks like a large projector to watch films and charming hosts, Shveta and Kul, who are always ready for a conversation.

Each room, of course, has en suite bathroom with 24 hours supply of running water (both hot and cold), air conditioning, and all modern amenities that you would need in a room. The two terraces are great places to lounge after a long day of sightseeing. Shveta and Kul both love helping people plan their day in Jaipur so ask them as many questions.

They run an absolutely amazing and friendly homestay, Oh and we must not forget the breakfast! Local food cooked fresh and delicious for every morning.

Sunnymead Bed and Breakfast – Shimla

This charming little colonial-style property lies just before the chaos of Mall Road in Shimla. Hidden away by a long flight of stairs, this is one of our favourite places in the mountains. And the best thing about the property is its owner Madhavi, the most delightful lady you could meet, forever smiling, a world of information about the mountains, hidden walking routes and a great cook.

This place has four bedrooms, three double rooms and one small single room. A common area with a cosy fireplace, gourmet-style food, and lovely views from the rooms and veranda of the hills. Just a point to note is that if you are afraid of dogs and cats then this place is not meant for you as there are plenty of in house resident pets.

Tree of life – Delhi

More a bed and breakfast than a homestay, but this lovely property is home to Ashwani bazaz and his delightful family. In the leafy and green residential neighbourhood in Saket Delhi, Tree of Life has seven rooms and the family lives on the top floor of the building.

The rooms are spacious and clean and have all the amenities like television, air conditioning or heating in winter and earthy Indian interiors with a modern touch. The breakfast is fresh and cooked by the staff. The biggest draw to the place though is Ashwani’s insight on the city.

A big foodie himself he has the best suggestions for places to eat and the hidden gems that make Delhi special. His mum does run another special place called Life Tree and that also is just as nice and in the market area of Lajpat Nagar.

Mohan Niwas – Jodhpur

Descendants of the Royal family, the owners of Mohan Niwas are a father-daughter duo. The house is full of character and trinkets, pictures and showcases the glorious history of the Royal family. The breakfast here is one of the best spreads you will have and don’t be in a hurry to leave as when you sit down with Madanji conversations get interesting and then you inevitably end up sitting for longer than you expected.

They have five rooms and each are spectacular. Located close enough to the old city maybe 15-20 minutes ride out. A lovely place to come back to after the hustle of the old city.

Dewar – Udaipur

This place is right up on our list, in the small village Sisarma 7 kms away from Udaipur is this beautiful home of colonel and his family. They live in one section where they serve you a delicious breakfast and meals or you can share a beer with them in the evening on the terrace which has a fantastic view of the entire city of Udaipur.

Having worked for the Maharajah of Udaipur for the longest time, hospitality is in this families blood and they are fantastic hosts. The rooms are nicely decorated and are extremely large. Local furniture and rugs brighten up the room.

They do have a few friendly dogs roaming the property. And you would wake up in the morning and spot peacocks and plenty of other birds. You can take a few short hikes from here also.

Seetalvan Apple Orchards – Kotgarh

This farm stay is in a small village 60 kms north of Shimla. Imagine 6 wooden cabins tucked away in the Indian Himalayas. A wood-fired pizza oven, great Indian food, a warm fireplace and a common room, an evening fire and with that two lovely owners.

They live in a separate house maybe 50 flight of stairs above the rooms and are always there for advice and conversation, but also give you enough space to just soak in the view of the property. Each room has a verandah which overlooks nothing but the Himalayan mountain range. You could snuggle up with a hot chai, blanket and a book for days.

You could explore the small towns nearby and visit a lovely little church, one of the oldest in India if we are not mistaken. If you visit in September it is apple season and the colours of the orchard are spectacular. A lovely offbeat destination for some downtown. Definitely a contrast to cities in Rajasthan and Varanasi.

Aashray homestay – Varanasi

Another homestay made special because of the owners. The first thing we have to mention is their amazing food, we could go back there just to eat. The location is unfortunately not on the ghats. However, the wealth of knowledge that the Kapoors have about Varanasi history and heritage make up for that.

And it is a half an hour walk to the ghats. Sometimes Kamalji would accompany guests and share little details about the alleys. The trinkets of information that he shares make Varanasi so interesting.

This city can have a profound effect on you. The fact that living and dead seamlessly coexist can be alarming for a few. It is always good to have the comfort of a home to go back to at the end of the day. They have four rooms and have recently renovated the rooms on the first floor.

An honest review of ‘Mewar Haveli’ hotel Udaipur

Mewar Haveli is one of the hotels we suggest you stay at in Udaipur. It is placed in a romantic city, perfect for honeymooners, luxury travellers and mid-range budgeters. This honest review will help you decide if it meets your criteria for your trip.

Romantic – Yes, especially if you have a lake facing room. Even otherwise, it is a cosy hotel with tasteful attention for detail and the roof top restaurant takes up a different mood from morning to sunset to night.

Backpacker friendly – Not really, initiating interactions with other guests in the hotel did not seem easy. It gets a varied age group and families, so not a high percentage of young backpackers.

Children friendly – Mewar Haveli does not have any games room or activities per se for children. Yet, families with kids would be comfortable here. It is easy to step out and get around on foot; again the restaurant with the lake view would always be fun for the kids.

Rates – Remember Mewar Haveli is between a budget and value for money hotel. Rooms start at INR 1,400 and go up to INR 2,100 approx.

What we love about Mewar Haveli

  • That it is an eleven room, cosy and homely hotel with great location.
  • Has a gorgeous rooftop restaurant with a commanding view of the Pichola Lake.
  • If you can get one of two lake facing rooms, they are a steal at the price. The element the view can add to stay is indescribable.
  • That you can just walk to the city attractions around, or stroll around the town from Mewar Haveli.

What we like about Mewar Haveli

  • The room was spotlessly clean, clean linen and cushy bed (nice soft mattresses).
  • The bathrooms are perfectly adequate, running hot water and very clean.
  • The staff were polite and non-pushy.
  • It has an elevator to get to the rooftop restaurant, other similar hotels around the lake do not have an elevator. And it feels a little uncourteous to walk up passing other people’s rooms.
  • The rooftop restaurant prepares lovely non-greasy, fresh and non-spicy vegetarian food. And the prices seemed fair.

What we did not like

Personally we did not have any complaints for the Mewar Haveli, Although the following is good to bear in mind –

  • The rooms are of different sizes and most of them are compact. Not a deal breaker, but if you travel with a lot of suitcases you might fill the room up.
  • That they only have two lake facing rooms. The rest are equally comfy, but after having stayed at both, you want to try and book in advance to get a lake facing room.

In the hustle-bustle of the city

Don’t shy away from staying in the more chaotic corners of Delhi. Because it often offers great connectivity to tourist sights, the airport and the railway station via the Metro.

Woodcastle

Woodcastle stands as a pleasant oasis in the bustling chaos of the Karol Bagh markets. A good value for money option in Delhi. It has a communal area in the lobby (Wi-Fi available) where you can interact with other travellers. Subsequently, the rooms are a little small. However, in contrary, it’s still equipped with all basic amenities. It is close to the Karol Bagh metro station.

Florence Hotel and Inn

Situated in Karol Bagh, central Delhi, Florence is surrounded by shopping arcades, entertainment plazas and a lot of hustle-bustle. The rooms are of a good standard and would be what you would expect in any new developed modern properties. Even though there is nothing spectacular about this property, you will still get good services and secondly, it’s a good location.

In season INR 3,700 onwards (USD 75+ / EUR 53+), TripAdvisor Reviews

Lal Haveli

A great budget option near the New Delhi railway station in the backpacker area of Paharganj. They have acceptably clean rooms and bathrooms, great central location, however, no real service and windowless rooms is what you get. But, having stayed here before, it’s definitely worth the price they charge. Each room has an air conditioner, television and hot water facilities. Great budget and value for money hotel.

Hotels in Delhi: Residential location

Tree of Life

A popular pick for our guests. This cozy bed and breakfast is located in a charming residential part of South Delhi. It is set in a small, leafy street away from traffic and city. Moreover, an added advantage of staying at Tree of Life other than its lovely hosts and decorative furnishings is its proximity to the metro in Saket. Having stayed here ourselves we can safely say that this is an oasis in the chaos of Delhi. A hotel experience in Delhi like no other.

Amarya Haveli

Located in the plush suburb of Delhi, Hauz Khas, this is an ethnically decorated and jewel-coloured serene haven. Accordingly. there’s lots of colour, Indian textiles, artefacts and imaginative designs in the entire property. However, having only 6 rooms this is a place you have to book early. This is not too far from the metro in Hauz Khas.

Something Different

Shanti Home

‘Shanti’ means peace and that is what you will get in this tranquil getaway in Janakpuri (Delhi). The 17 themed rooms are tastefully decorated and the service at the hotel is great. However, the only flaw is that in spite of it being well connected by metro, it is still too far away and isolated from all the tourist sites and markets.

The Imperial

Teak and rosewood, Italian marble, art deco architecture is what defines this luxurious property situated at Janpath (Central Delhi). Close to Connaught Place this property is a stone’s throw away from where the action is with bars, restaurants and the groovy market of Janpath. With 200 rooms this is still quite a large hotel, and it is also fairly expensive on your pocket.

Epitome of Luxury

The VanyaVilas

This is another one of the Oberoi Vilas properties and has an all tented accommodation. You will not be roughing it out at all, in fact, they are one of the most luxurious tents we have seen. Situated right next to the park if you have the budget there is no other place that we would recommend. The Library and pool bars here are great. The best part of the VanyaVilas is its landscaping and privacy given to each tent. It’s an absolutely high-end hotel experience in Ranthambore, offering a great view of the surrounding hills.

An honest review of HR Palace Hotel in Jaipur

If you’re visiting Jaipur then we can suggest the best hotel to stay in depending on your budget and criteria. We have stayed at the HR Palace Hotel and can recommend it for those travelling on a budget. Read our review to get a wider image.

Hawa Mahal Jaipur
Hawa Mahal, one of the many beautiful monuments in Jaipur

Who should stay at HR Palace hotel

Romantic – Not particularly, however, if you are backpacking on a relatively strict budget (during the warmer months), the rooms can be extremely cosy, especially for the price.

Children friendly – Children comfortable yes, again the rooms are very nice. No swimming pool, or any activities kids can engage in. It does have a small and a very safe lawn though.

Backpacker friendly – H R Palace is not particularly conducive for backpackers. It attracts a mixed age of both Indian and International crowd. Although chance conversations are always possible, it is still not your typical backpacker hotel.

Rates – H R Palace is a budget to value for money hotel, room rates range between INR 1,600 – 2,000.

What we love about H R Palace

The room quality for the price is unbeatable; H R Palace is a newly renovated hotel with very comfortable, western standard rooms. Very comfortable mattresses and big bathrooms, you are getting 3-4 star hotel quality rooms for a bargain price

What we like about H R Palace

  • The location is very central, a short drive from the railway station and a short drive to the old city sites
  • The hotel is very clean and the staff is cordial

What we did not like about HR Palace

  • It is a modern day building and lacks any traditional or heritage charm. Good to bear in mind that Jaipur does have numerous heritage and traditional hotels. Not at the same price point and comfort value as H R Palace.
  • It lacks a swimming pool which could be a nice addition during the warmer months.
  • Overall the hotel has more of a corporate feel.
