6 Best Things To Do In Kochi

‘Kochi, formerly known as Cochin, is a former European settlement with a large Christian population and a seafaring heritage. It is a town of enormous charms that reminds visitors of the Caribbean more than India’ – Garry Weiss

There are many things to do in Kochi. Kochi, a town that feels like a home away from home, would be the most perfect way to describe this city. Once upon a time because of its bustling port, Kochi had witnessed diverse cultures from all over the world (Dutch, Portuguese, Britain) who could not resist the charm of the city and wanted to stay.

Tracing down how all these cultures that left their prints here, from a 450-year-old synagogue to the unique Chinese fishing nets and the Dutch-Portuguese styles of structures, you would feel exactly like the travelers of the past and not want to leave!

The palace has a collection of Hindu murals on its ceiling, inspired by the famous Indian epic (Ramayan) and is the highlight of this palace. The whole structure from inside has the typical Keralite form of architecture with a tinge of the European influence.

Ayurveda in India – All you need to know

India is known across the world as the home to ancient forms of healing and mastering the body. Among these is the art of Ayurveda. It is the traditional Hindu system of medicine based on the idea of balance in bodily systems. It is also one of the reasons many people, tourists and Indians alike, travel across India seeking out Ayurvedic treatment. Read on to know more about Ayurveda and Ayurveda retreats in India.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a 5000 year old art of healing from India. It is the oldest recorded traditional system of medicine which is still practiced and lived today. Ayurveda takes into account the physical and mental constitution of the person and how his/her social relationships influence their environment.

It teaches us how our lives can be influenced, shaped and extended, and eventually be controlled. Hence, Ayurveda requires self-responsibility regarding the quality of nutrition, your way of life and the mindfulness with yourself and others. An Ayurveda retreat can therefore help you with recreation and well-being in general.

Ayurveda is also effective to treat and sometimes cure chronic diseases. Some of these diseases include rheumatic diseases, metabolic disorders, cardiac cycle afflictions, allergies, skin diseases and gynaecological disorders. Ayurveda can also have a positive effect on patients with mental disorders like depression, anxiety, etc., because the concept of Ayurveda suggests that physical as well as mental disorders originate from disorders in the flow and balance of energy.

Of course, the usual precondition applies: Ayurveda can only unfold its full potential if practiced in daily life and not only in the Ayurveda retreat.

How does Ayurveda work?

There will first be a thorough diagnostics of the eyes, pulse and tongue, and you will fill a questionnaire about your health. Post that, a licensed doctor proposes a plan for treatment. They will adjust it according to personal requests, the time you will spend at the Ayurveda retreat and the climatic conditions during the stay. Personal diagnostics and daily consultations with experts are an essential part of every high-quality Ayurveda therapy. During the treatment, you will have a daily consultation session in which you can individually adjust the treatment and its intensity according to your condition.

Daily personal consultation sessions with experts make the experience highly individualized

Ayurveda harmonizes the mind and body through herb and oil applications. The essence of Ayurvedic medicine, which is the knowledge of herbs and their effects, is mostly unknown to the western world. The healing effect of Ayurveda is based on the individual composition of applications of oil and herbs.

Another essential part of Ayurveda retreats is Yoga and meditation, and both of these, along with Ayurveda, originated from the ‘vedic’ science.

Nutrition plays a crucial role in the Ayurveda retreat as well, since it is one of the cornerstones of the concept of Ayurveda. Due to the different metabolisms of every body, a nutrition consultant who offers advice according to the requirements of the individual body is part of a typical Ayurveda treatment. This consultant helps you learn what you can improve in the future when you are back home. In general, an Ayurveda retreat is fit for everyone who wants to improve one’s health and well-being.

What is the best time to come to india for an ayurveda retreat?

Typically, people come to India for Ayurveda retreats during the monsoon. Kerala in South India is where you will find the most retreats. The monsoon season here starts in June and lasts until September, and returns again from October to November. This is the best time for the body to purge itself. But this also means that the climate brings a lot of rain, humidity and sometimes even flooding and landslides. If you want to avoid these climatic conditions, you’re better off choosing a time in winter, between December and March. From March until the next monsoon season in June it can be very hot and humid.

HOW LONG TO SPEND IN A RETREAT FOR AYURVEDA IN INDIA?

Since Ayurveda depends so much upon the individual and your life, there is no commonly followed duration for an Ayurveda retreat in India. If you want to go to an Ayurveda retreat for recreation and wellness, 2 weeks are sufficient. However, it is not uncommon for people to seek treatments and help with more serious diseases or illnesses. If this is your intention, then we advise planning for a longer stay, from 4 to 6 weeks. Take even longer if necessary.

Why we love Wildlife Sanctuaries in South India

Wildlife sanctuaries in South India are magical places – and here’s why. The British coined the term ‘monsoon’. Accordingly, this term is used to describe the incredible phenomenon that engulfs the better part of this country come June. The south-western state of Kerala is where it makes landfall first. Soon after, it traverses across the other southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and the recently formed Telangana.

Rains hit the union territories of Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and the former French colony Puducherry during this period. Also, it is these five states and three Union Territories that comprise of South India. They happen to be the ones that benefit most from this seasonally reversing wind.

Because, this region boasts astonishing biodiversity and makes a South Indian jungle safari a richly rewarding experience. Since South India is home to multiple wildlife sanctuaries and diverse flora and fauna, picking one over the other is difficult.

Leopard spotting

South India isn’t the best place to spot tigers. Since it isn’t the ideal habitat for tigers, it allows smaller cats to thrive. Accordingly, wildlife sanctuaries like Parambikulam and Kabini almost guarantee leopard sightings. But this is just one of the reasons why nature tours in South India come highly recommended.

The astonishing Asiatic elephant

Visit any of the wildlife reserves in South India and crossing paths with this pachyderm is a near given. Large swathes of land are prime elephant territory, of which Bandipur National Park is a prime example. But don’t be fooled by their lumbering gait and benign appearance. Solitary tuskers charge quite unexpectedly.

A birder’s paradise

Dense vegetation with plentiful indigenous flora means that the wildlife sanctuaries in South India are home to several different avian species. From flycatchers and thrushes to hornbills and woodpeckers, birders flock here for a number of lifers, including the rare Wayanad Laughing Thrush, a bird endemic to the Western Ghats. There are several such wildlife reserves in South India, of which Silent Valley and Dandeli National Park are a couple of the more popular. Fun fact: Silent Valley is so named because of a perceived absence of cicadas in the forest!

Water world

The safaris in South India are not restricted only to land which makes them extremely interesting. Accordingly, in places like the Periyar National Park, boats are the preferred mode of transport. But be it the land/water Periyar has something in store for you. The banks of the Periyar River are a great place to spot otters and crocodiles, and the surrounding forests for wild dogs, deer, Indian Bison (gaur), bears and macaques. The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park is another unique habitat where visitors can hope to see dugongs, dolphins, whales, and an astounding variety of fish.

In the dead of the night

A few of the wildlife sanctuaries in South India offer visitors a singularly unique opportunity – a night safari. In South India, the wildlife officials are exceptionally particular about rules and regulations. Since there is such strict vigilance, it allows them to conduct carefully monitored safaris after dark. This is when an entirely different set of creatures abound. The rustles, growls, screeches and squeaks, accompanied by mysterious eyes glowing brightly in the beams of flashlights make this an absolutely unforgettable experience.

Surfing in Kerala and Karnataka

Surfing isn’t a traditionally ‘Indian’ thing to do. But, with a coastline as vast as the country has, it’s not surprising that there are quite a few great surf spots to choose from. Both, are one of the coolest adventure destinations in South India. If you look eastwards, Puri’s beach has good surfing, as does Vizag. Surfing in Kerala happens primarily at Kovalam and Varkala, and there are also surf schools here in case you’re looking for a course. Further up the coast, Karnataka has a few great spots to catch some waves. One of the coolest things about surfing in India is that you won’t ever be sharing the waves with too many people! And if you’ve got your own equipment, there’s miles of unexplored and virtually untouched coastline to check out!

Kite surfing in Goa

If you’ve been to Goa, you’d have seen scores of basic water-sports facilities on most beaches there. Offering the usual suspects like jet-skiing, parasailing, banana-boat rides and the like. But Goa’s also got opportunities for some of the widest range of water-based adventure activities in South India. Way up in the North of Goa, you’ll find Vaayu Village, a fun, boutique guest house. It also offers surf, wakeboarding, stand up paddleboarding and kitesurfing equipment and lessons. It’s a relaxed place to hang out with other water-babies, and it’s also a great way to get introduced to these sports if you aren’t familiar with them!

Trekking through the Western Ghats

If you’re more of a land animal and like your adventure sports were a little more mellow, the Western Ghats have some amazing treks that you can try. You’ll find everything and is the best adventure experience in South India. From challenging routes to easy half-day treks that are suitable for the entire family here. Maharashtra’s got some incredible hill-forts that you can trek to. Going right after the rainy season is amazing when the landscape’s full of vivid greens. And further down South in Kerala, there are rolling hills carpeted with tea and coffee plantations. They are so refreshing that they are also a birdwatcher’s delight!

Because of lack of trekking infrastructure in terms of signposting and the like, we definitely recommend only venturing out with a reputable guide. We’re happy to help you plan your trekking trip to South India. Get in touch with us to answer your questions!

Scuba Diving in Pondicherry and the Andamans

Where there’s the ocean, there’s gotta be some diving! The Andaman and Nicobar islands are the obvious choice for any dive trips, but if you’re looking to get certified and don’t want to make the journey out to the islands, you can also consider Pondicherry. Admittedly, the visibility and diversity of marine life here isn’t as spectacular as it would be in the Andamans, but this actually it a great place to get your certification. Additionally, an artificial reef has been created off the north shores of Pondicherry, which has already increased the chances of spotting something exciting while you’re out in the water.

Of all the adventure tours in South India, this is probably the one that excites us the most. Rock climbing and bouldering are relatively new to the country, but, like with many other adventure sports, experts have discovered some awesome climbing routes in both Hampi and Badami, with something for everyone, no matter what your experience level is. Clubbed with the incredible history and culture that both towns have, this can be the perfect addition to your South Indian adventure holiday!

The country isn’t best known for its romantic getaways but you will be surprised at the experiences that you can find here. There is, of course, a wide range of environments from the mountains to sweeping coastlines.

That gains you the benefit of your choice of background (or even mix it up a bit!). But more than that, there’s also an incredible variety of gorgeous hotels and romantic resorts in India to choose from. Here are some of our top picks for most romantic hotels in India. Which includes a mix of quiet boutique hotels, opulent palace resorts and everything in between. You’ll find options for a honeymoon, active holiday, or even family-friendly options for those of you with a brood.

For a magical honeymoon: The Taj Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad

This one’s one of the most romantic hotels in India. But, we’ll argue that it’s also one of the most romantic in the world! The erstwhile palace of the Nizam of Hyderabad, this ‘mirror of the sky’ lives up to its name and is a spectacular structure. You can explore the beautifully restored antique fixtures and furnishings that fill the elegant spaces.

It’s like stepping into a fairytale! A stay here is a magical experience, right from the shower of rose petals that greets you when you arrive. And the fabulous treatment will continue throughout your time. For instance, champagne at sunset, candle-lit dinners for two, and much more is on offer here!

For a mountain wonderland: Wildflower Hall, Shimla in the Himalayas

Places that claim to be ‘luxury honeymoon hotels’ are aplenty, but there few that fit the bill. Likewise, as Wildflower Hall, about 16 kms outside Shimla, especially if you love the mountains! Shimla was the British summer capital, and this region is full of colonial homes. But few are as lovely as this place.

The former home of Lord Kitchener has a fantastic spa, and a stunning infinity pool that overlooks Himalayan peaks. And the rooms are nothing to laugh at, either! You can opt for a few easy excursions in the area if you don’t want to stay tucked into bed all day. The staff will be happy to assist you to plan a picnic or trek. But if you feel like leaving, we’ll be surprised!

For a tropical island escape: Jalakara, Andaman & Nicobar Islands

If you’ve got Castaway fantasies, this one should be right up your alley! Jalakara, on Havelock island in the Andamans, is a self-proclaimed hybrid between a boutique hotel and private villa. It’s got a handful of rooms and suites, each done up in a rustic-chic vibe, with dark woods and stone.

It’s a lovely, intimate space that invites you to disconnect from the rest of the world and just be. Also, Jalakara is a great choice if you’re interested in staying a bit active on your holiday. As the scuba diving and snorkelling around Havelock is fantastic!

For a touch of the wild: Samode Safari Lodge, Bandhavgarh

For those of you whose idea of romance includes some time in the jungle, Samode Safari Lodge is a fantastic option. While India has many amazing safari resorts, including Oberoi’s Vanyavilas in Ranthambore and the Taj Safari Lodges, we love this one for the intimate experience it offers.

Samode Safari Lodge has 12 luxurious villas that reflect the local architecture and design styles. It also has enormous bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers. It’s complete with a deep tub that’s perfect to sink into after a day spent tiger-spotting in Bandhavgarh.

It is this, the attention to detail, and, most of all, the surprise mealtime venues. Yes, you’ll be served all your meals at a different locations! That make this one of the most memorable and romantic hotel experiences in India.

For some family-friendly ‘we-time’: Kumarakom Lake Resort, Kerala

A traditional, authentic Kerala experience steeped in quiet luxury is what you can expect from the Kumarakom Lake Resort. The villas here are all built from heritage homes from across Kerala. They are set around lush greenery and waterways that wind through the property. And, because of the range of activities on offer here, it’s also a good choice if you’re travelling with family.

The resort offers craft classes to keep the younger ones occupied and happy. It has a lovely infinity pool to lounge in and an Ayurveda spa. It’s housed in the carefully restored 200-year-old home of a family of famous Ayurveda practitioners, to get pampered at. What more could you want!

For the Taj Mahal in all its glory: The Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra

The Taj Mahal is an eternal symbol of love. For a truly special viewing, look no further than the iconic Oberoi Amarvilas. The magical Taj Mahal is located just 600 metres away. That view itself – you can see the Taj Mahal from every room here!

This could make it one of the most romantic hotels in India. In addition, the resort itself is magnificent. It has been designed keeping in mind to reflect the Mughal heritage of Agra.

The Amarvilas has special offers for couples, including special treatments at the spa and an intimate dining experience, complete with a moonlit view of the Taj Mahal. There’s no way we could leave it off this list!

Five reasons why we can never get tired of Kerala

Whoever came up with the tag line ‘God’s own country’ definitely knew what they were on about – it often seems like Kerala’s got more than its fair share of really great experiences that make it an absolute delight to travel to, over and over. Planning a holiday in Kerala is sometimes quite difficult – there’s just so much to choose from! Here’s why a vacation in Kerala always gets us excited, no matter how many times we’ve been.

Because of its amazing food

In Kerala, holidays often end up revolving around the food – and with good reason! South Indian food can be a revelation to people who think of it only as idlis and dosas. From the vegetarian feast that is the Sadhya (a range of traditional dishes served on a banana leaf, typically for special occasions) to the unique flavours of Moplah cuisine and the ridiculously fresh seafood, there’s enough variety to send a gourmand into a tizzy here! Kerala is, after all, the land of spices, and that, combined with liberal use of the ingredients that are found locally – like coconut – means that the food is bound to be delicious.

Because of the backwaters

Do we even really need to explain this one? The backwaters in Kerala are very rightly popular – after all, what’s not to love about lazily floating down waterbodies, watching the world go by from the deck of a houseboat? The backwaters are a system of canals, inlets, lakes and lagoons that run across much of the state parallel to the coast, and the best way to explore them is on board a traditional kettuvellam (houseboat). It’s slow-paced, it’s charming, and we love it!

Because of the beaches

Who doesn’t love being a beach bum? The tropical weather in Kerala pretty much ensures that beach time here is gonna be great for your tan. And there are so many to choose from all along the coastline, too! Marari Beach is a stunning stretch of sand, Bekal’s beach has a fort (yes, you read that right!) overlooking it that you can explore, and there’s Muzhapillangad Beach, which you can drive on!

Kovalam Beach is very beautiful, though a little more crowded than other beaches in Kerala

Because of the hills

It’s not just coast that’s got all the goods – head inwards, and there are some stunning hill-stations that will make you dream of relocating. Mist draped plantations and tea and coffee estates (complete with gorgeous estate homes that you can stay at!) dot the hills of the Western Ghats through Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and are lovely to be in when the summer is at its peak.

Because of its culture

Honestly though, like most places, it’s the people that make Kerala so special. No matter what time of the year you’re travelling in South India, you’re bound to come across a festival or celebration. Plus, you can always watch a kalarippayattu performance (and even learn the basics of this ancient martial art at the CVN KalariNadakav) or a dramatic Kathakali dance recital. And hey, getting an Ayurvedic massage technically counts as a cultural activity too, right?

Our Favourite Homestays In India

There is a saying in India, ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ which literally translates into ‘Guest is God’. That is exactly the kind of service and thought process that goes into many homestays in India. Anytime you walk into an Indian family home be expected to be treated extremely well. The homestays in India range from Royal palaces to lovely bungalows and even small two-bedroom apartments in cities.

We at India Someday highly recommend homestays because they just enrich your experience of the city. You not only get a local’s perspective on the city but delicious home-cooked food along with it.

We began India Someday with helping people travel to India. However, when we started, never did we once think that we would come across such a lovely bed and breakfasts and homestays. After 6 years of running the company and having sent 3000+ people to different homestays in the country, we have tried to make a shortlist of some of our favourite homestays in India.

Jaipur Friendly Villa – Jaipur

Run by a lovely couple, the Mehra’s, this quaint home is tucked away in a quiet residential part of Jaipur. This is a cosy accommodation which comes with perks like a large projector to watch films and charming hosts, Shveta and Kul, who are always ready for a conversation.

Each room, of course, has en suite bathroom with 24 hours supply of running water (both hot and cold), air conditioning, and all modern amenities that you would need in a room. The two terraces are great places to lounge after a long day of sightseeing. Shveta and Kul both love helping people plan their day in Jaipur so ask them as many questions.

They run an absolutely amazing and friendly homestay, Oh and we must not forget the breakfast! Local food cooked fresh and delicious for every morning.

Sunnymead Bed and Breakfast – Shimla

This charming little colonial-style property lies just before the chaos of Mall Road in Shimla. Hidden away by a long flight of stairs, this is one of our favourite places in the mountains. And the best thing about the property is its owner Madhavi, the most delightful lady you could meet, forever smiling, a world of information about the mountains, hidden walking routes and a great cook.

This place has four bedrooms, three double rooms and one small single room. A common area with a cosy fireplace, gourmet-style food, and lovely views from the rooms and veranda of the hills. Just a point to note is that if you are afraid of dogs and cats then this place is not meant for you as there are plenty of in house resident pets.

Tree of life – Delhi

More a bed and breakfast than a homestay, but this lovely property is home to Ashwani bazaz and his delightful family. In the leafy and green residential neighbourhood in Saket Delhi, Tree of Life has seven rooms and the family lives on the top floor of the building.

The rooms are spacious and clean and have all the amenities like television, air conditioning or heating in winter and earthy Indian interiors with a modern touch. The breakfast is fresh and cooked by the staff. The biggest draw to the place though is Ashwani’s insight on the city.

A big foodie himself he has the best suggestions for places to eat and the hidden gems that make Delhi special. His mum does run another special place called Life Tree and that also is just as nice and in the market area of Lajpat Nagar.

Mohan Niwas – Jodhpur

Descendants of the Royal family, the owners of Mohan Niwas are a father-daughter duo. The house is full of character and trinkets, pictures and showcases the glorious history of the Royal family. The breakfast here is one of the best spreads you will have and don’t be in a hurry to leave as when you sit down with Madanji conversations get interesting and then you inevitably end up sitting for longer than you expected.

They have five rooms and each are spectacular. Located close enough to the old city maybe 15-20 minutes ride out. A lovely place to come back to after the hustle of the old city.

Dewar – Udaipur

This place is right up on our list, in the small village Sisarma 7 kms away from Udaipur is this beautiful home of colonel and his family. They live in one section where they serve you a delicious breakfast and meals or you can share a beer with them in the evening on the terrace which has a fantastic view of the entire city of Udaipur.

Having worked for the Maharajah of Udaipur for the longest time, hospitality is in this families blood and they are fantastic hosts. The rooms are nicely decorated and are extremely large. Local furniture and rugs brighten up the room.

They do have a few friendly dogs roaming the property. And you would wake up in the morning and spot peacocks and plenty of other birds. You can take a few short hikes from here also.

Seetalvan Apple Orchards – Kotgarh

This farm stay is in a small village 60 kms north of Shimla. Imagine 6 wooden cabins tucked away in the Indian Himalayas. A wood-fired pizza oven, great Indian food, a warm fireplace and a common room, an evening fire and with that two lovely owners.

They live in a separate house maybe 50 flight of stairs above the rooms and are always there for advice and conversation, but also give you enough space to just soak in the view of the property. Each room has a verandah which overlooks nothing but the Himalayan mountain range. You could snuggle up with a hot chai, blanket and a book for days.

You could explore the small towns nearby and visit a lovely little church, one of the oldest in India if we are not mistaken. If you visit in September it is apple season and the colours of the orchard are spectacular. A lovely offbeat destination for some downtown. Definitely a contrast to cities in Rajasthan and Varanasi.

Aashray homestay – Varanasi

Another homestay made special because of the owners. The first thing we have to mention is their amazing food, we could go back there just to eat. The location is unfortunately not on the ghats. However, the wealth of knowledge that the Kapoors have about Varanasi history and heritage make up for that.

And it is a half an hour walk to the ghats. Sometimes Kamalji would accompany guests and share little details about the alleys. The trinkets of information that he shares make Varanasi so interesting.

This city can have a profound effect on you. The fact that living and dead seamlessly coexist can be alarming for a few. It is always good to have the comfort of a home to go back to at the end of the day. They have four rooms and have recently renovated the rooms on the first floor.
