Getting Around Bangalore

Being the capital of Karnataka, Bangalore has a fair number of reliable options to take you from place to place.

Auto Rickshaw

Auto rickshaws (tuk-tuks) in Bangalore are a convenient mode to move around if you wish to beat the traffic especially while going sightseeing.

The tuk-tuks generally run on meter however most of them refuse to do so and ask to settle on a fare before starting your trip so always make sure to haggle for the price and do not settle for the first amount told to you.

Uber/Ola and Car Hire

Bangalore does have taxis but we recommend using Ola and Ubers instead to avoid scams and travel in comfort!

If you wish to book a car, you would have to do the same from your accommodation or a car rental service in advance.

Metro

Bangalore Metro is fairly new and connects to almost every part of the city. It is one of the quickest ways to get around the city and skip the crazy traffic. The fare typically ranges from INR 20-60.

We recommend spending a day or two in Bangalore as it has so much to offer! We hope our things to do in Bangalore help you explore the city.

However, planning your journey can be quite overwhelming while trying to fit in all the hidden gems of this region. Some of the places you can add to your itinerary, if you’re in Bangalore, include – Mysore, Coorg, Coimbatore and Wayanad.

Indian forts that are great to explore with children

It’s hard to go wrong with the forts in India. All that history and battle-ready architecture is a sure-fire hit, especially with kids! These forts also tend to have grounds that are great to let your child role-play in!

Gwalior Fort

Across the country’s vast expanse, there are so many of them that it’s actually difficult to tell exactly how many forts are in India. Exploring the beautiful forts of India is one of the best family vacation ideas, with each one telling a more interesting story than the last.

1. The Red Fort, Delhi

At the top of the list is one of the best-preserved forts in India. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Red Fort is also one of the most beautiful forts of India. And also a great answer to the question: ‘what can kids see in Delhi?’. Built-in 1639, it served as the seat of the Mughal empire for over 200 years. It’s majestic red sandstone walls and ornate ramparts, make it the perfect location for the Prime Minister of India to address the nation every Independence Day.

2. Mehrangarh, Jodhpur

Rajasthan has some of the most opulent palaces and forts in India, and Mehrangarh is a prime example. Towering 400 feet above the Jodhpur skyline, it is also a popular ziplining destination, ticking another box for great family vacation ideas. Showcasing varied forms of architecture, the fort and its palaces were built and renovated over 500 years. There are many galleries exhibiting valuable artefacts.

Mehrangarh is a treasure trove of information and a great learning experience for children if they’re so inclined. And if they aren’t, you can tell them that scenes from The Dark Knight Rises were filmed here!

3. Golconda, Hyderabad

Golconda Fort asks for a good deal of your time with a boundary wall about 10kms long. The region is famed for having produced some of the world’s most famous diamonds, including the Koh-I-Noor and the Hope diamond. The fort itself is an absolute marvel of architecture, with astounding acoustics. A clap at the entrance of the Fateh Darwaza can be clearly heard a kilometre away at the Bala Hisar pavilion. It’s a trick that never fails to awe children! It also happens to be one of the most beautiful forts of India, so you’ll have a good time exploring it as well.

4. Chittorgarh, Rajasthan

Another UNESCO World Heritage site, Chittorgarh is said to be the largest fort in India, spread over a mind-boggling 691 acres. Although it has a rather gruesome claim to fame – that of women committing mass immolation following the defeat of the fort’s rulers – there’s a lot more to Chittorgarh than just that. Palace complexes, temples, memorials and water bodies dot the vast expanse, and exploring them can be quite fruitful. Of particular note are the two intricately carved towers, the tower of victory (Vijaya Stambh) and the tower of fame (Kirti Stambh).

5. Amer Fort, Jaipur

Imagine arriving at a fort astride an elephant. Well, that is exactly what you can do at the Amer Fort. That it is situated in Jaipur, which already boasts of marvels like the Hawa Mahal and the City Palace, takes nothing away from the grandeur of the Amer Fort (though admittedly, your kids might enjoy the elephant ride the most!). Of particular significance is the Sheesh Mahal, or Palace of Mirrors, which as the name suggests, has walls and ceilings adorned with countless pieces of silvered glass. With a number of other sights to see, including the Ganesh Pol, the Diwan-i-Aam, and the Sila Devi temple among others, the Amer Fort is also one of the most beautiful forts of India.

6. Sindhudurg, Maharashtra

Now, most forts are built on land to guard against marauding armies. But Sindhudurg was built to protect the coastline from naval attacks. Constructed between 1664 and 1667, it is a testament to the foresight of Shivaji Maharaj, who commissioned its construction. A walk
along the ramparts is a delightful experience, with the expanse of the Arabian sea stretching before your eyes. This is also a nice scuba diving site, making a visit to Sindhudurg is one of the preferred family vacation ideas.

Bonus:

With sparse historical records available, it is difficult to prove beyond doubt which the oldest fort in India is. Qila Mubarak in Punjab, said to date back to a period between 90 – 110 AD, and the Kangra Fort in Himachal Pradesh, even further back to 3,500 years ago. Either way, a visit to both would be well worth your time if you and your family love history!

Mumbai – Goa – Mysore – Kerala

Start in Mumbai, with its British-era architecture, energetic buzz and amazing food. This city offers you a wealth of historic heritage to explore. It is a great jump-off point to destinations across West and South India. But hold your horses, there is much more to come as we move to Goa to enjoy its relaxed atmosphere.

Enjoy Goa’s various water adventure sports, lounge on the beach and visit its churches and colourful old Portuguese district. Then, head southward, with a quick stop at Mysore to enjoy its rich history. It also has a great zoo! If you can handle spice, you should try the famous Mysore masala dosa, filled with potatoes and spicy chutney. Continue to Hampi, a town of ancient ruins and plenty of outdoor activities, all wrapped up in a happy, hippie vibe. This is especially fun with slightly older children who might enjoy the treks, or even give bouldering a shot!

Wrap your family vacation in South India up by relaxing amid the backwaters in Alleppey, Kerala. You can try a bit of yoga, get an ayurvedic massage (or three!) and dine on the freshest seafood as you live on a houseboat, and we can help you find activities that’ll keep your little ones engaged too, from learning traditional fishing methods to climbing a coconut tree, or spice plantation walks if that’s more their speed.

You can club this with the bungee jumping for a more well-rounded adventure in North India. Outdoor adventures aside, though, this stretch of the Ganges is truly gorgeous – clear waters that look turquoise or green depending on the light, and white sandbanks that you want to dig your toes into!

Paragliding in Himachal Pradesh

If you look up at the skies over the little Himalayan hamlet of Billing, you might just see brightly-coloured parachutes floating through the air. This unassuming town is the take-off point for paragliders making their way down to Bir, soaring over some truly spectacular landscapes along the way.

This gentle adventure is perhaps the closest most of us will ever get to flying, and if you’re going to take to the skies, we can’t think of few better places to do so than with the majestic Himalayas in the background!

Adventure Travel Vacations in India

Although India isn’t really known to be an adventure tourism destination, like New Zealand, yet one finds plenty of destinations for adventure lovers in India to get their fix. It still some amazing visuals to offer. From snow-clad peaks to arid deserts, and rain forests to mighty oceans, India has many diverse landscapes. Each, with their own brand of excitement.

Here are some ideas for adventure travellers in India and why we think India’s a great adventure travel destination!

Because of the Himalayas!

The Himalayas are among the popular Indian adventure travel destinations, that offer adventure travel options, ranging from easy treks for first-timers to serious expeditions. Among the most exhilarating adventure travel vacations in India is the Chadar Trek in Ladakh. ‘Chadar’, actually means sheet, and that’s what the Zanskar River turns into in winter. A sheet of ice.

The entire duration of the trek, which is upward of 10 days, is spent on this sheet of ice. Along with the temperatures plummeting to -50° C. Nearby, in the Spiti Valley, is the Kanamo Peak, which, at 19,600 feet ticks all the excitement boxes. In the Northeastern part of the country lies Mt. Kanchenjunga, the third-highest peak in the world.

Although the Sikkim Government has of late banned climbing the mountain from the Indian side. It can be viewed in all its glory on the Yuksom Goechala Trek in Sikkim. This trek is one of the most spectacular in the country, with pristine rivers and rhododendron forests.

But what sets adventure travel vacations in India apart from anywhere else in the world is heli-skiing. The Himalayas have some of the best ski slopes in the world. Though some of the best ones can be accessed only by helicopter, the rush of excitement makes it well worth the effort.

Because you can get adventurous even while exploring ancient traditions!

Kalaripayattu, commonly known as Kalari for short, is a martial art that can be traced back to 3,000 years. It is arguably the oldest martial art in the world. Performed using swords, daggers, spears, and maces. Kalari requires high levels of concentration and hand-eye coordination.

This martial art is witnessing a dramatic resurgence and can be learnt at various locations around India. The Kalari Academy of Performing Arts in Bangalore offers certificate and short-term courses as well as a residential program. So, if you’re looking for adventure activities in India, Kalaripayattu should feature on your agenda. Even if you don’t want to learn it, you should definitely try and catch a performance in Kochi!

Because of the coastlines

With more than 7,500 kms of coastline, there is no dearth of water-based adventure activities in India. You can try your hand at surfing, snorkelling, jet-skiing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, scuba diving… the list goes on! Havelock in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is a hotspot for scuba enthusiasts, while Covelong Point, Mahabalipuram, and Vizag are great places to surf.

Let us know if you’re looking for a water-based holiday; we’ll help you find one best suited for you! For some more information on skiing in India, check out this blog.

Because we’ve got the facilities

After all, no matter how beautiful a place might be, obviously, no-one wants to throw themselves off a cliff or go diving unless they know they’re safe! But what a lot of people aren’t aware of is the amount of adventure tour packages in India, where adventure activities are more and more adopting and meeting International standards, making adventure sports in India safer than it’s been before!

Among the many adventure activities in India, ziplining is fast gaining popularity. FlyingFox operates ziplines in 4 locations currently, including one at Rishikesh, which takes you careening 200 feet above the mighty Ganges. Rishikesh also gives you the opportunity to go white water rafting, or kayaking on the Ganges – read more about this here!

And this is just a starting point: there are a number of other activities that can make adventure travel vacations in India truly memorable! Hot air ballooning has started picking up, there are some great spots for paragliding, and the North-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh has a vast network of caves to explore.

A big expense when travelling on a budget in India can be the cost of getting from one place to the other – the country is huge! You can minimise costs by making use of the trains and buses that run across the country. All stops listed have plenty of options for both, but remember to make your bookings in advance.

Five reasons why we can never get tired of Kerala

Whoever came up with the tag line ‘God’s own country’ definitely knew what they were on about – it often seems like Kerala’s got more than its fair share of really great experiences that make it an absolute delight to travel to, over and over. Planning a holiday in Kerala is sometimes quite difficult – there’s just so much to choose from! Here’s why a vacation in Kerala always gets us excited, no matter how many times we’ve been.

Because of its amazing food

In Kerala, holidays often end up revolving around the food – and with good reason! South Indian food can be a revelation to people who think of it only as idlis and dosas. From the vegetarian feast that is the Sadhya (a range of traditional dishes served on a banana leaf, typically for special occasions) to the unique flavours of Moplah cuisine and the ridiculously fresh seafood, there’s enough variety to send a gourmand into a tizzy here! Kerala is, after all, the land of spices, and that, combined with liberal use of the ingredients that are found locally – like coconut – means that the food is bound to be delicious.

Because of the backwaters

Do we even really need to explain this one? The backwaters in Kerala are very rightly popular – after all, what’s not to love about lazily floating down waterbodies, watching the world go by from the deck of a houseboat? The backwaters are a system of canals, inlets, lakes and lagoons that run across much of the state parallel to the coast, and the best way to explore them is on board a traditional kettuvellam (houseboat). It’s slow-paced, it’s charming, and we love it!

Because of the beaches

Who doesn’t love being a beach bum? The tropical weather in Kerala pretty much ensures that beach time here is gonna be great for your tan. And there are so many to choose from all along the coastline, too! Marari Beach is a stunning stretch of sand, Bekal’s beach has a fort (yes, you read that right!) overlooking it that you can explore, and there’s Muzhapillangad Beach, which you can drive on!

Because of the hills

It’s not just coast that’s got all the goods – head inwards, and there are some stunning hill-stations that will make you dream of relocating. Mist draped plantations and tea and coffee estates (complete with gorgeous estate homes that you can stay at!) dot the hills of the Western Ghats through Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and are lovely to be in when the summer is at its peak.

Because of its culture

Honestly though, like most places, it’s the people that make Kerala so special. No matter what time of the year you’re travelling in South India, you’re bound to come across a festival or celebration. Plus, you can always watch a kalarippayattu performance (and even learn the basics of this ancient martial art at the CVN KalariNadakav) or a dramatic Kathakali dance recital. And hey, getting an Ayurvedic massage technically counts as a cultural activity too, right?
