In India, weather conditions change with season and region. The September weather and temperatures make it a great month to visit India. This article will give you an insight into the weather in India in September in various regions.

India Weather in September

Monsoon starts in India from mid-June and lasts till September. You will usually experience light or heavy rainfall, but only in short spurts. It is the end of the monsoon season in September in India. India in September is drier and sunnier than the months of July and August and not quite as hot yet as in October. North India does not see as much rainfall as southern India. The states of Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh often receive sporadic rainfall, with Kerala receiving persistent showers.

This is also a shoulder season in India, before tourism starts in full swing from October. Accommodations will offer good discounts during the off-season. You can even stay at heritage hotels and luxury resorts at a much lower price during the off-season. Plus, you will find fewer visitors at popular monuments, museums, and bustling cities. So if you are planning to visit India on a budget, September is one of the best months to plan a trip.

Here is a detailed overview of what the weather would be like each month in India, in different regions of the country. Feel free to explore.

Best places to visit in India in September

September is a shoulder season for tourism. Since the peak months for tourism in India are from October to March, September sees fewer crowds and better rates along with great weather in many parts of the country.

A trip to the Golden Triangle can be ideal during September. The Golden Triangle is perfect if you are visiting India for the first time, since it covers the major tourist monuments in the northern part of India, such as the Taj Mahal, India Gate, Red Fort, and Hawa Mahal. The route usually begins from Delhi, where you can explore monuments like the Red Fort and India Gate, and streets like Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. From there, you can travel to Agra to see the majestic Taj Mahal and many other historic monuments in the city. The last spot of the Golden Triangle is Jaipur in Rajasthan, with architectural wonders like Hawa Mahal and City Palace.

The Himalayas in the far north, Rajasthan, Sikkim, and the west coast of India are some other places to visit in India in September. The temperatures in Tamil Nadu are also pleasant at this time. However, if you want to explore the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, the winter months from November to March might be a better option. Similarly, the beaches of Kerala and Goa are better avoided until the drier months, but the countryside and hill stations are certainly worth visiting.

North India in September

September is considered to be the post-monsoon period in the far North in the Himalayas, especially in the foothills around Rishikesh, Shimla, Dharamshala or other hill stations.
The main monsoon months of June, July and August often bring the risk of landslides, cloud bursts, flooding and storms. However, September comes with clear weather and fewer chances of rain. The temperatures are pleasant, and it is the perfect time to get a great view of the distant peaks of Himalayas. September is ideal for activities like hiking or trekking in the mountains, as well as for relaxing.
Ladakh’s peak season for tourism is from June to early September, but it can often get very cold towards the end of August. The climate in Ladakh is hard to predict, since it can change from one year to another. You can fly to Leh and enjoy the stunning landscapes it has to offer, or chat with the locals and explore the many monasteries in the region. If there is heavy snow, you may not be able to travel from Manali to Leh and the Pangong Tso or Nubra Valley.
The Valley of Flowers in Himachal Pradesh is in full bloom during September, making this the ideal month to visit. Check out our tour ideas for the Himalayas here.

Coming to the lower northern part of India, September is a great month to plan a trip here. The rains are usually light and in short spells. You will find sunny days and clear skies, with temperatures swinging between pleasantly warm and hot. Thanks to the monsoon season, the countryside is lush green. You will be able to see farmers working in the green fields, while the lakes, rivers, and waterfalls flow abundantly with water.

September is a fantastic time to visit Rajasthan. The climate is cool and pleasant, and rains are not an issue. Plus, since it is not peak season, you get better rates on accommodations and fewer crowds at popular places. On the other hand, there are some activities you may have to miss out on, such as an overnight camel safari in Jaisalmer, or exploring the national parks in the state, since these activities don’t reopen until early or mid-October.

Best places to visit in India in January

January is a great month to visit India. The climate is mild and cool, making it perfect for sightseeing and exploring during the day. Tourists from the Southern Hemisphere have their summer break from December to February, so most tourist places in India are extra crowded in January.

You can tour the Golden Triangle in January – the Red Fort in New Delhi, the Taj Mahal in Agra, and the Hawa Mahal in Jaipur. Rajasthan is a very popular tourist destination in January.

South India is warm but pleasant in January, so you can soak in some sunlight without feeling burnt.

North India in January

The weather in India in January varies a lot just within the North. In the far north, the Himalayas are blanketed with snow. If you are looking for trekking and other outdoor activities, this region may not be the best choice in January. Many roads and hiking trails are blocked or closed due to the snow, making traveling difficult, expensive, and tiring.

But if you want to ski, January is a great month to do so. Gulmarg in Kashmir is one of the most popular destinations in India for skiing. You can also opt for other smaller resorts in Manali and Auli in Himachal Pradesh.

Delhi can get quite cold in January, with temperatures ranging from 22 to 5°C (71-41°F). The cities of Agra and Rajasthan are pleasantly warm during the day, heating up to 20 to 28°C (82-86°F).

Evenings get cold in North India – nature reserves and northern cities like Jaisalmer, Amritsar and Delhi get particularly cold at night in January. Rooms with heating facilities are uncommon except in high-end hotels. However, hotels and guest houses usually provide warm blankets. We recommend carrying a blanket, a pair of warm socks, and maybe something to cover your ears at night.

At this time of year, clouds are rare and you will be safe from the rain in Northern areas. Take note however, that there may well be persistent fog around Delhi and Agra. It can last for days at a time, disrupting air traffic and train departures, so it is good to prepare for delays.

The average temperature ranges from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, and you can see many crystal clear waterfalls and streams.

Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim or Arunachal Pradesh allow you to experience the clean air of the mountains. These regions have plenty of friendly home-stays available in and around the areas. You will be able to find many chapels and Buddhist monasteries here. You can also visit the hill station of Shimla via a toy train! You can look at some of our mountain travel routes here.

The lower north of India, including the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur), is extremely hot in May. Temperatures cross 40 degrees Celsius on most days. We recommend spending limited time in these regions, because the climate can get unpleasant quite quickly. However, due to the off-season, you can get some great discounts on luxury hotels and accommodations. If you do decide to visit this region in May, make sure to explore the outdoors in the early morning or late afternoon.

If you are a wildlife enthusiast, you must visit India during this month. India is home to the largest number of Royal Bengal tigers in the world, and April and May are the best time to spot some of these regal striped cats. Because of the high temperatures, the watering holes dry up, and the jungle cats are left with fewer places to hydrate, making the probability of sightings much higher. Safaris often open early in the morning, or in the late afternoon, so you can avoid the scorching afternoon sun.
There are plenty of options to spot wildlife in North India, such as Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, or the Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand. For some inspiration on where you can go to experience a safari, check out Bernard’s 14 Day Safari Vacation with us.

Ganga Dussehra is celebrated in Varanasi, Rishikesh, and Haridwar along the banks of the river Ganga with many activities and rituals.
Buddha Purnima takes place in May. Although it is celebrated in many parts of India, Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh is the best place to celebrate it with many cultural performances and rituals.
On the day of Buddha Purnima, the Summer Festival is celebrated in Mount Abu in Rajasthan. The festival has horse races, skating races, shows, games, and folk performances.

If the heat is unbearable, escape to the hill stations of Kodaikanal and Connoor in Tamil Nadu, or the coffee plantations of Coorg in Karnataka for a cool respite.

While Goa, too, gets hot in May, it remains a year-round tourist destination. Relax on the beaches, or explore the rainforests of Goa. For all beach-lovers, check out our blog on some lesser-known beaches in India.

While the temperatures rise during the day, the mornings and evenings have low temperatures with pleasant weather. There still may be fog lingering over the cities of Delhi and Agra in February.

The month is a great time to explore the Golden Triangle in northern India. Start with the Red Fort in New Delhi, travel to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal, and then visit Jaipur to visit Hawa Mahal. You can also explore more of Rajasthan, such as the cities of Jodhpur and Udaipur.

However, in the far north in the Himalayas, February can mean snow-blocked roads and hiking trails. It can get difficult and expensive to travel to the mountains in February. In the evenings, Northern India can get fairly cold, with average temperatures ranging from 15° to 5°C. Further, rooms with heating facilities are uncommon, luxury hotels being an exception. However, hotels and guesthouses will usually provide warm blankets for the night. We suggest carrying a pair of warm socks and maybe something to cover your ears at night. Nature reserves, Jaisalmer or regions further North such as Amritsar or Delhi get particularly cold at night during this time of the year.

May Escapes

Summer’s in, school’s out. There’s not many places left now where you can beat the heat in May and do it without seven thousand other sweaty bodies crowding in on you. Or are there?

We’ve brought you a list of our top picks for this May. All fall into the categories of both cool (weather-wise) and super-cool (as in off-beat).

Corbett National Park

Dense, mist-encased jungles cling tight to the slopes of the Kumaon Hills. Jim Corbett was once hailed as a hero for getting out his gun and saving the locals from the native man-eating tigers. He then became an even bigger hero when he turned to their conservation. The Tiger Reserve, named after him and made famous by his classic Jungle Book, is now home to 220 big cats. May is the perfect time to see them. As the summer heat whittles down the vegetation and dries up those feline throats, the animals must move further and further out of hiding and toward the major watering holes. Not that tigers are the only attraction. These 1318 sq km of pristine forestland in the Himalyan foothills are home to wild elephants, sloth bears, langur monkeys, rhesus macaques, peacocks, otters, chital, sambars, hog deer, barking deer, leopards, mugger crocodiles, gharials, monitor lizards, wild boars and jackals and more than 600 species. Must we go on?

Getting there: Take a flight, train or car from Delhi to Ramnagar. Alternatively, you can also head out from Lucknow, Chandigarh or Dehradun.

Sikkim

No matter which direction you head in this little Himalayan state, there is only beauty. Bright carpets of rhododendron spill down the slopes of the valleys in the north. Towering masterpieces of religious statues loom over you in the South. The East’s vibrant city lights are perfectly offset by the oceans of serenity that are the ancient monasteries of the West. Go for the sights, stay for the spirit.

Getting there: The only way to enter Sikkim is by road through West Bengal, so you can first fly into Bagdodra or take a train to Siliguri and head out from there. From here you can catch a government bus or hire a jeep to Gangtok. Foreigners will need to obtain a Restricted Area Permit (or Inner Line Permit). These are available quite hassle free at your entry point into the state, or can be pre-arranged at Sikkim travel desk in Darjeeling (inside the Old Bellevue Hotel in Chowrasta district), and from Sikkim Tourism Center in Siliguri located at the S.N.T. bus stand. Carry a couple of passport size photos with you.

This grand park is also known as Tathagata Tsal. The Buddha statue is the fourth-tallest statue in India.

Shimoga

Here’s one for those of you down south, who’d like to cool off but don’t want to travel all the way up north for snow. How about some waterfalls instead? Start your trip at the Jog Falls for some breath-taking waterworks and then move to Kodachari Peak teeming with life in its deep forests. Keep some time out for the numerous temples and heritage sights. Finally, remember to savour that drive through Agumbe, or better yet, trek it!

Getting there: You can take a train or bus directly into Shimoga from Udupi or Mangalore. Udupi is accessible by train and Mangalore by air.

Travel Tips During the Monsoons in Mumbai

India is primarily a country of three major seasons. The summer (March – June), monsoons (June – September) and winter (October -February). Depending on what part of the country you are travelling to or are in, the weather will be one of these ranging from mild to extreme. Generally, the monsoons in Mumbai arrive by the second week of June, providing instant relief from the heat and humidity caused by the preceding summers in Mumbai.

Travel Tips During the Monsoons in Mumbai
Kids out on their bikes, enjoying the weather, on Marine Drive which overlooks the Arabian Sea

The monsoons in Mumbai

Beginning from the southern coast, the monsoons reach Mumbai in the first ten to fifteen days of June. Mumbai and monsoons are a winning combination. The city looks a lot more beautiful. You can see kids in the city switch from their beloved cricket to football or playing in the rain. Often you can see adults at Marine Drive or Juhu Beach enjoying the rain.

The monsoons also have a very tricky drawback here, because in Mumbai it doesn’t rain it pours. Moreover, the roads in the city are not all that great, so at times it can be dangerous. Caution is advised. Poor infrastructure and planning may lead to a lot of problems with travelling. Trains and buses run late. The famous Mumbai traffic is also at its best. Travelling is always met with a certain delay. Having said that, monsoons are also the time when you would want to be in the country. And if you already are, we suggest you visit Mumbai.

Mumbai is a city made up of seven small islands, surrounded by the sea which is one of the most vital parts of Mumbai’s identity. It’s the only constant in a city where everything keeps changing with time. The sea is a big part of what makes the city of dreams stand tall, and the rain adds so much to its beauty. Here are a few things you could do to enjoy the season to the max.

Travel Tips During the Monsoons in Mumbai

Things to do in Mumbai during the monsoons

Marine Drive

Marine Drive is a landmark of Mumbai. People from all walks of life, regardless of the distance make it a point to visit Marine Drive. It’s on top of our suggestions too. Take a stroll down the promenade when it’s drizzling, with the sea providing a cool breeze as raindrops patter at your feet. It’s a very refreshing experience and highly rated by the locals so as to get the best feel of the monsoon season in Mumbai.

Getting here: Take a train to Churchgate station, the southernmost stop on the Western Railway line. As soon as you walk out of the station, look for the sea and start walking towards it and if you don’t know just ask someone or use Google Maps, it’s hardly a 5-minute walk away.

Visit a Cafe or Restaurant that overlooks the sea

Like the sea but don’t like getting wet? Visit an eatery that overlooks the sea. There are lots of cafes and restaurants that even on the dry days have a brilliant view of the sea, the monsoons in Mumbai just magnify it.

The Bayview Cafe in Colaba is one such place, perfect for a beer at sunset. It has an unmatched view of the sea, a lot similar to the view from the Taj for a fraction of the price. Places like Pizza by the Bay near Marine Drive are also exemplary for lunch or dinner while enjoying the rain on the water and the playful winds.

AER Lounge in Worli is another spot you must visit. An upscale restaurant with a panoramic view that is just unbeatable, with the Arabian Sea on one side, and on the other you can view the cityscape in all its glory during the monsoons.

Getaways around Mumbai

There are a few places, just a couple of hours away from Mumbai, which are a must-visit during the monsoons, away from the madness of the city. The Monsoons magnify the beauty of these places and the lush greenery is at its best.

Bhandardara

A holiday resort village on the western ghat, it is located in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. Just 185 kms away from Mumbai, it’s a place you must visit in the monsoons. The highest peak in Maharashtra Mount Kalsubai is also located here and the village is the base to many high mountains. It also has a beautiful waterfall and a placid lake ringed by forests. Bhandardara has everything a nature lover needs, and it only gets better during the monsoons.

Getting here: A drive from Mumbai to Bhandardara is quite quick. The route is full of ghats and can be tricky to navigate during the monsoons. So, if you plan to drive to Bhandardara we advise doing so with caution. The closest railway station to Bhandardara is Igatpuri railway station, from there you can take either a state transport or a private bus up to Bhandardara which is approximately 45 kms away. Something to note is that on the way back to Mumbai, the trains from Igatpuri railway station are almost always late. So you might want to find some suitable alternative if need be.

Matheran

Matheran is the smallest hill station in Maharashtra and is located at an elevation of 800 meters above sea level. With a name that means ‘Forest on the Forehead of Mountains’, it is an eco-sensitive region, and also Asia’s only automobile-free region.  What makes Matheran so popular is the close proximity to the big cities. It’s just 90 kms away from Mumbai, so getting there isn’t too time-consuming.

Matheran is full of viewpoints and parks, with a whopping number of 28 points to visit. It also has a couple of lakes and 2 parks. The Neral-Matheran toy train is a lovely journey up to Matheran. It’s a beautiful ride up the hills with only a few stops far and between. The Toy Train, as its name would hint, is small, and the compartments are a bit old, but it’s worthwhile. A few other places like Louisiana Point, Panoramic Point, Sunset Point, Porcupine Point, and Charlotte Lake are places we recommend you visit when in Matheran.

Getting here Matheran is easy to drive to from Mumbai city. Neral is the closest railway station. Trains from Pune and CST(Mumbai) ply daily to Neral and from there you can take a toy train to the Old Matheran station, soaking in the beauty of the journey towards Matheran. By road, you can take the Mumbai-Pune Highway (NH4) or the Mumbai-Pune expressway.

Karnala Bird Sanctuary

The Karnala Bird Sanctuary is located near Mumbai, in the Panvel taluka of Raigad district. A popular hangout for bird watchers and hikers as it is within the reach of Mumbai and based near the legendary Karnala Fort in Mumbai.

137 different species of birds reside in the Karnala Bird Sanctuary and as many as 37 different species of birds migrate here at different seasons. If you are a bird lover, a hike in the monsoons here is a must.

Getting here The Karnala Bird Sanctuary is a 60 kms drive from Mumbai. You can take a train from CST station (southernmost from the Central line) to Panvel. It’s 12 kms from there with a lot of buses, taxis, and rickshaws to take you to Karnala. State transport buses run from Bombay Central to Karnala, but they aren’t recommended. A taxi from Mumbai to Karnala is also a good option.

Lonavala

The most popular monsoon getaway for the locals of Mumbai and Pune, the drive here on the Mumbai-Pune expressway is amazing. Lonavala has a beautiful landscape, a lot of waterfalls and bright colours all around. The Tiger Point in Lonavala is the Grand Canyon of Maharashtra, the view of the mountain range during the monsoons is unmatched. Try catching the sunset or the sunrise from here.

Getting here We suggest driving to Lonavala on the Mumbai-Pune expressway. You can take the train from CST station to Khopoli (the last station on the central line) and it’s 15 kms from there (you can also take a bus or taxi from there).

Pushkar Camel Fair Rajasthan

The Pushkar Camel Fair Rajasthan sees around fifty thousand odd camels; quite a unique character. It’s extremely colourful, with a whole lot of activities happening. For example, folk performances, camel races, dances, great food and art and photography.

The Pushkar Camel Fair began as a local Therade fair for camel and other cattle owners. It takes place every year at the time of Kartik Purnima (the full moon in the month of Kartika in the Hindu Lunar calendar), and over the years, it has become an attraction for travellers.

Camel trading, coupled with a bunch of religious rituals is still the premise of the whole affair, and the trading is what draws most tourists. The later part becomes a pilgrimage and ‘a must’ is taking a dip in the holy Pushkar lake.

How is the Pushkar Camel Fair celebrated?

The first thing you’ll notice when you get here is … camels! They’re everywhere. They are all dressed up and being paraded for sale, you will almost miss the two odd lakh people that are in the area at the same time. Camel traders, pilgrims and tourists are all there to play their parts in this old school but still going strong, colourful carnival.

There are camel races, temple dancing, snake charmers, folk singers, classical musicians, acrobats, an art and craft bazaar, camel dances and traders, and carousel rides.

There are another set of pious people you’ll find here who have come for the purpose of pilgrimage. They bathe in holy lake waters of to wash their sins. Pushkar is considered the only holy land for worshipping Lord Brahma – the creator of the universe and the lake is said to have formed where he dropped a flower. After all the hoopla with the camels is over, full moon and two days around it are dedicated by pilgrims to bathing in the lake. It is said the special blessings are bestowed upon those who take a tip in the Pushkar Lake on full moon day.

Best ways to experience the Pushkar Camel Fair while travelling in India?

If you are willing to spend, you might want to go up in a hot air balloon and get an aerial view of the scene. Go on one of those special Pushkar Fair walking tours (they run in the morning-evening). The morning walk is best to see pilgrims bathing in the lake and have a first-hand experience of rituals being performed. While the evening is the best time to witness the ground where the bustling fair is held at its best.

Precautions for the Pushkar Camel Fair in India?

Pushkar is full to the brim with visitors during the fair, and accommodation prices skyrocket while rooms run out very fast. That’s why it’s better to arrive a few days before and get a good, cheap deal to make your bookings. You can choose to stay anywhere between a home/farmstay, a guest house, a desert tent or a swanky heritage hotel in Pushkar.

Pushkar is a bit infamous for its drug scene and you know how sometimes, things can go out of hand at such places during festivals. Thus, it’s best to stay on your guard. Don’t get duped by local pundits (priests) and other greedy people who are looking to make a buck off tourists. It gets very crowded during the fair and you’re basically in a desert, so stay hydrated, cover your head and face to avoid the sand troubling you, dress relatively conservative so you don’t get the wrong kind of attention (it’s Rajasthan you’re in, not Goa).
