Called the City of Lakes, Udaipur in Rajasthan is nestled in the lush hills of Aravalli, a fresh change from the desert landscape of the state. The city exudes royalty through its ivory marble palaces, mighty forts, pristine lakes, historic ghats, and timeless elegance. Founded in the 16th century by Maharana Udai Singh, the city holds great historical significance in India.

The numerous lakes in Udaipur have also earned it the nickname “Venice of the East”. Lake Pichola, the crown jewel of Udaipur, shimmers under the sun as it offers beautiful views all around. The Fateh Sagar Lake is the second largest lake in the city, with picturesque views and plenty of opportunities for boat rides and cycling. Badi Lake is another charming lake just outside of Udaipur.

The majestic City Palace, featuring vast courtyards, halls, and museums, overlooks the enchanting Lake Pichola. Visit Bada Mahal, Jag Mandir Palace, and Kumbhalgarh Fort, all preserving the bygone era. The Jag Niwas Palace, now converted into Taj Lake Palace, floats in the middle of Lake Pichola, a grand five-star hotel with rich architecture and impeccable hospitality.

The city’s spiritual and cultural heritage also shines through its various museums, temples, and art. Bagore ki Haveli is a stunning museum with over 100 rooms showcasing Rajasthani heritage through paintings, glasswork, carvings, and historic artefacts. The Vintage Car Museum displays a large collection of vintage cars from the royal Rajput era. Ambrai Ghat is the perfect peaceful escape to experience spirituality, yoga, or simply people-watching. Temples like Jagdish Temple, Mahakal Mandir, Mansapurna Karni Mata Temple, and Neemach Mata Temple are holy sites for Hindus.

Enjoy shopping in the vibrant markets of Udaipur that offer local handmade items. Hathi Pol Bazaar, Bada Bazar, and Bapu Bazaar are some markets that sell miniature paintings, handicrafts, textiles, footwear, and jewelry. Shilpgram is a crafts village practising rural crafts you can buy from skilled artisans. If shopping tires you out, sit down and have an authentic Rajasthani meal. Udaipur’s cuisine includes rich dishes like Dal Baati Churma, Lal Maas, Gatte ki Sabzi, Pyaz ki Kachori, Ghevar, and Rabdi.

Udaipur will charm you, captivate you, and leave you wanting more. A royal city rich in history, culture, and heritage, Udaipur will give you the experience of a lifetime. Plan your trip to Udaipur with India Someday!

FIND OUT HOW
WINTER
(November to February)
Cool and pleasant weather makes winter the best time to explore Udaipur’s palaces, lakes, and historic streets. The comfortable climate is perfect for sightseeing, boat rides on Lake Pichola, and enjoying sunset views over the Aravalli Hills.
SUMMER
(March to June)
Summers are hot and dry, with temperatures rising significantly from April onwards. While afternoons can be intense, early mornings and evenings are still suitable for visiting attractions and enjoying lakeside views.
MONSOON
(July to September)
The monsoon brings moderate rainfall that refreshes the landscape around the lakes and hills. Udaipur becomes greener and more scenic during this time, offering a quieter and romantic atmosphere for travellers.

Seasonal Highlights

March
Holi in Udaipur is celebrated with colour, music, and royal traditions.
July/August
The Teej Festival marks the arrival of the monsoon and is celebrated with traditional music, and women dressed in bright Rajasthani attire.
October/November
During Diwali, Udaipur’s palaces, temples, and streets are beautifully illuminated with lights and diyas.
