The best time to visit Agra is during the winter season, but the other seasons have other advantages. The capital city of Uttar Pradesh, Agra is popular all over the world as the home of the Taj Mahal, one of the most majestic wonders of the world. However, Agra is much more than just the Taj Mahal, beautiful as it is. There are many historic structures and fascinating attractions in the city that are just as mesmerizing as the Taj. Read this blog to find out the best time to visit Agra.

Winter in Agra (October to March)

Winter is the best time to visit Agra. with temperatures ranging from 15 to 28 degrees Celsius, the weather is cool and pleasant, the skies are a clear blue, and the humidity is low. This climate is perfect for sightseeing and exploring all the beautiful places in Agra.

The Taj Mahal, the crown jewel of Agra, is best visited during winters, especially in the early morning. Since winter is the peak tourist season in Agra, you will find hordes of tourists at this world-renowned attraction. So, early morning is the best time to visit the enchanting monument, when crowds are comparatively low. However, during peak winter, the Taj Mahal often gets shrouded in heavy fog, disappearing completely from view.

You can also visit the Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, and the old abandoned town of Fatehpur Sikri. The Taj Mahotsav is a 10-day event that takes place in February or March and is dedicated to the love of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The winter season welcomes the festival of lights, Diwali, which is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Agra. Holi, the festival of colors, also takes place in March.

This is a busy season for tourism in Agra, so make sure you book everything in advance. You will find more crowds and higher prices for everything, but this is a pleasant season to visit the city. Check out the things you can do while in Agra here.

Summer in Agra (April to June)

The summer season in Agra is not the best time to visit the city. The temperatures often rise up as high as 45 degrees Celsius, and the intense heat can be an issue – the intense heat makes it difficult to stay outdoors during the daytime. You can try to go out during early mornings or late evenings to avoid the heat.

However, the high temperatures mean fewer tourists and cheaper prices. So if you can withstand the heat, the summer season can be a good time to visit Agra on a budget. Visit the Taj Mahal, Itmad-ud-Daulah’s Tomb, or Baby Taj, or the beautiful Mehtab Bagh, perfect to watch the sun set over Taj Mahal. You can also visit the Kalakriti Cultural and Convention Centre during the day to escape the heat.

Wear loose, breathable clothes, apply plenty of sunscreen, and carry water and stay hydrated.

Monsoon in Agra (July to September)

Monsoons bring a respite from the scorching heat in Agra. The dry landscape turns lush green with the advent of rains. The temperatures stay between 25 and 35 degrees Celsius, the city receives moderate to heavy rainfall, and the climate is quite humid.

If you don’t mind the rains, monsoons are a great time to visit Agra. Not a lot of people venture outdoors in the rain, so this season offers many discounts on tickets and accommodations. The monuments look distinctly enchanting during the rains.

The Sadar Bazaar is a vibrant market selling handicrafts and other local goods you can take home as souvenirs. The Kailash Fair takes place in August or September and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

However, factor in some delays and cancellations, since the rains can sometimes be unpredictable. Carry an umbrella, raincoat, and appropriate footwear.

Things to note

  • The Taj Mahal is open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every day except Fridays, when it is closed for prayers. The enchanting monument is also open from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. for night viewing for five nights a month – the full moon night and two nights before and after the full moon. Only 400 visitors are allowed each night, and only for half an hour.
  • Avoid visiting the Taj Mahal on weekends if you can, since these two days are the most crowded. Early morning is the best time to visit the monument to escape the large crowd and see the Taj Mahal in relative peace.
  • Make sure to check the list for what to bring and not to bring to the Taj Mahal before leaving your hotel or hostel, since you could be charged an additional fee or your item might be confiscated.
  • Wear decent clothes while visiting heritage structures such as the Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, etc.
