On the edge of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan is Pushkar, one of the holiest and most spiritual towns in India. The town surrounds the sacred Pushkar Lake, with numerous ghats, ancient temples, and cafes dotting its perimeter. The desert landscapes, bustling markets, serene lakeside, and a laid-back vibe make for a very unique experience.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, dropped a lotus flower at this place, creating the holy Pushkar Lake. The lake is surrounded by 52 ghats and hundreds of temples, making the town an important pilgrimage destination. Visit the iconic Brahma Temple, one of the very few temples dedicated to Lord Brahma. The Savitri Temple, Varaha Temple, Rangji Temple, and Mahadeva Temple also play a big role in Indian mythology. The spirituality of Pushkar can be felt in its daily aartis at the ghats, with large lamps and sacred chants reverberating around the lake.

For adventure enthusiasts, Pushkar is surrounded by sand dunes that offer camel rides and jeep safaris with the most mesmerizing views. During the Pushkar Camel Festival, you can even take a hot air balloon ride over the town, enjoying panoramic glimpses of the green Aravalli range, golden sands, and the shimmering Pushkar Lake.

The cultural vibe of Pushkar also lures travelers to the town. The Pushkar Camel Fair is one of the most unique festivals of India, and visitors from all over the world gather to experience it. The festival of Holi is also celebrated with great aplomb in Pushkar. Get a glimpse of the Rajashani craftsmanship through its vibrant handicrafts sold in its chaotic bazaars. Buy colorful textiles, silver jewelry, and handcrafted products to take back home.

Pushkar is completely vegetarian and alcohol-free, but that doesn’t mean any dearth of delicious food. In fact, Pushkar is a haven for food lovers and vegetarians. From local delicacies such as dal baati churma, kachori, gatte ki sabzi, malpua, and lassi, to continental fares like pasta, pizza, and falafel, Pushkar has got you covered.

Explore the temples, go on camel safaris in the desert, visit the villages, or simply sit by the ghats to watch local life go by. Pushkar manages to blend sanctity and spirituality with its immersive and lively culture. This is a place that will call you back again. Visit Pushkar with India Someday!
