In the heart of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan is Jaisalmer, the Golden City of India. Mighty forts, grand havelis, ancient temples, and vast sand dunes make up the landscape of Jaisalmer. With a rich history, vibrant cultural heritage, and traditions that stand the test of time, Jaisalmer offers a taste of the old-world royalty that charms travelers.

It is believed that Raja Rawal Jaisal met a sage who told him that according to a prophecy by Lord Krishna, a descendant of his clan would establish a new kingdom atop Trikuta Hill. This is where Raja Jaisal then built Jaisalmer in the 12th century. The formidable Jaisalmer Fort, or Sonar Quila, is the most prominent attraction of Jaisalmer. This living fort houses nearly 3000 residents, along with shops, restaurants, and temples.

Visit Nathmal ki Haveli, Salim Singh ki Haveli, and Mandir Palace, stunning examples of the architectural brilliance of Rajasthan’s royal heritage. Bada Bagh houses royal cenotaphs that pay tribute to the kings of Jaisalmer, while the Longewala War Memorial is a tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in battle. Spirituality in Jaisalmer can be felt in its holy temples such as the Tano Mata Temple, Ramdevra Temple, and the group of seven Jain temples within the Jaisalmer Fort complex.

For a bit of an adrenaline rush, the sand dunes of Thar are ideal for an enthralling jeep safari or quad biking across the rugged desert. You can also try parasailing to get a stunning bird’s eye view of the golden landscape, or camp under the starry moonlight in the sands.

Jaisalmer is known for its unique and vibrant arts woven delicately through its cultural fabric. The art of Kathputli, or puppeteering, the folk dance of Ghoomar, and the Kalbelia dance performed by the snake charmers of Rajasthan all pay homage to the heritage of the state. Arts such as hand-block printing, pottery, and handicrafts also flourish here. Explore the markets of Jaisalmer such as Sadar Bazaar and Bhatia Bazaar, where you can buy beautiful batik and block-print textiles with applique work, mirror work, and gota work, unique jewelry, and leather footwear.

Jaisalmer also offers rich flavors and hearty meals – try mirchi bhajiya, pyaz ki kachori, laal maas, dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, ker sangri, and cool drinks like thandai and lassi. And while exploring the many activities that the city provides, Jaisalmer’s natural beauty cannot be overlooked. Mesmerizing sunrises and sunsets over the golden sands of the Thar, tranquil oases like Gadisar Lake, and the arid landscapes of the Desert National Park should definitely be on your bucket list!

Jaisalmer is an enchanting city that draws you in with its vibrant beauty and culture, with something for everyone. Plan your trip to Jaisalmer with India Someday!
