Mahabalipuram was named after the legend of the demon king Mahabali, who was killed here by Lord Vishnu. The region was then ruled by the Pallava dynasty, when it was renamed to Mamallapuram, dedicated to King Narasimhavarman, who was honored with the title of “Mamalla” for his wrestling skills.

The UNESCO World Heritage Group of Monuments in Mamallapuram includes many enchanting structures with historical significance. The Krishna Mandapam has majestic bas-relief structures telling stories of Lord Krishna, whereas Arjuna’s Penance depicts the story of the descent of the Ganges. The Pancha Pandava Mandapam is the largest cave temple in Mahabalipuram, an unfinished monolithic feat of architecture. Visit the Pancha Rathas, Krishna’s Butter Ball, Mahishasuramardini Cave Temple, Shore Temple, Trimurti Cave Temple, and the Varaha Cave Temple, all excellent examples of Dravidian and Pallava architecture.

The culture of Mahabalipuram can be experienced through its festivals, food, and local life. The Dakshinachitra Heritage Museum and Cholamandal Artists Village showcase the art and craft of the region. Mamallapuram celebrates festivals such as Pongal, Masi Magam, Float Festival, and Deepotsavam with great fervour. The Mahabalipuram Dance Festival is a magnificent festival set against the backdrop of Arjuna’s Penance. Places to visit in Mahabalipuram

Mamallapuram Shore Temple

A trip to Mahabalipuram is incomplete without visiting the Mamallapuram Shore Temple, one of the oldest significant temples in South India. Standing tall right by the sea, the UNESCO World Heritage Site was built in the 8th century under the Pallava dynasty. Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, the temple is a fine example of Dravidian architecture.

Pancha Rathas

The Pancha Rathas, or Five Rathas, are an extraordinary feat of monolithic rock-cut architecture, carved entirely out of single granite stone. These five carvings symbolize the chariots of the five Pandava brothers and their wife Draupadi. Along with the chariots, you will also find carvings of an elephant, a lion, and a Nandi bull in the complex.

Krishna’s Butterball

Krishna’s Butter Ball is a gigantic, almost-round boulder balanced precariously on a slope, appearing to defy gravity. This granite rock has been in the exact position for centuries, withstanding heavy rains and cyclones and fascinating historians and geologists for years. The rock is named after stories of Lord Krishna, who was known for stealing butter from people’s houses as a kid.

Tiger Cave

A few miles away from the rest of the temples and caves, Tiger Cave was built in the 8th century by the Pallavas. As the name suggests, the cave has carvings of tiger heads all around the facade. You will need to hire a cab or bike to get here.

Arjuna’s Penance

Also known as the Descent of the Ganges, Arjuna’s Penance is an open-air bas-relief carved on two massive granite boulders. One of the largest stone carvings in the world, this rock-cut masterpiece depicts stories from Hindu mythology and carvings of celestial beings.

Explore the heritage monuments

Mahabalipuram is an open-air museum, with many ancient monuments dotted around the town, built in the 7th century during the reign of the Pallavas. The Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas, Krishna’s Butterball, and Arjuna’s Penance, Varaha Cave Temple, Mahishasuramardini Cave, and Krishna Mandapam are a few monuments worth visiting.

Surfing

Mahabalipuram is one of the best surfing destinations in India. The coastline of the town is safe for even beginner surfers, and there are many surf schools around that provide lessons and rent surfboards. June to September is the best time for surfing here.

Watch sculptors at work

The incredible sculptors of the Pallava dynasty paved the way for the granite sculpting tradition of Mahabalipuram. Even today, you will find many artisan workshops where you can observe sculptors working with granite, a skill passed through generations over time.

Relax at Mahabalipuram Beach

The coast of Mahabalipuram has a laid-back vibe, perfect for peaceful activities such as long walks, people-watching, and relaxing. Watch the fishermen fishing at sea, go on sunrise walks, and try the fresh seafood at the beach cafes and shacks.
