Situated on the banks of the holy Ganges, Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh is a city as old as time. With a history tracing back to more than 3000 years, Varanasi is believed to be the place where the world was created. Also known as Kashi, or Benaras, it is indeed one of the oldest continually inhabited cities on Earth.

Varanasi is the heart of spirituality in India. The legendary Ganga aarti on Dashashwamedh Ghat is probably the best example of this. The surreal ceremony with rhythmic chants, clanging cymbals, and oil lamps will surely captivate you. The city is also home to many temples and shrines nestled in the narrow bylanes. Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, Bharat Mata Temple, and Tulsi Manas Temple are some of the well-known shrines you can visit.

The ghats of Varanasi are the soul of the city. Aside from Dashashwamedh Ghat, the Assi Ghat offers a lively atmosphere, perfect for a boat ride along the river. Manikarnika Ghat is the most auspicious place to be cremated among Hindus. Funeral pyres burn here day and night, a strange spectacle of life and death coexisting.

For a mesmerizing experience, visit Varanasi during Dev Deepavali in November. The ancient city is lit up with oil lamps, adorned with rangolis, and offers a stunning fireworks display. Holi is also a great time to visit Varanasi, since the entire city celebrates with vibrant colors, water, and music.

Take a sunrise or sunset boat ride along the River Ganges, or set sail on MV Ganga Vilas for the longest river cruise in the world spanning 51 days. And while you are here, don’t forget to try the local food of Varanasi. Street favorites include Kachori Sabzi, Choora Matar, Tamatar Chaat, Chena Dahi Vada, Lassi, and Malaiyyo. End your meals with the iconic Banarasi paan.

Varanasi is also known for its legendary crafts. Be it the intricate threadwork of Banarasi silk sarees or metalwork, jewelry, ornaments, and handmade crafts, every product in Varanasi comes from years of skilled craftsmanship.

The city of Varanasi is where ancient traditions old as time thrive in the present, creating an enchanting experience for anyone who comes here, leaving them wanting more. Visit Varanasi with India Someday!

FIND OUT HOW

Weather Overview

WINTER
(November to February)
Cool and pleasant weather makes winter the best time to explore Varanasi’s ghats, temples, and narrow streets. The comfortable temperatures are ideal for boat rides on the Ganges and attending the famous evening Ganga Aarti ceremonies.
SUMMER
(March to June)
Summers are very hot and dry, with temperatures rising sharply from April onwards. Sightseeing is best planned early in the morning or in the evening when the heat is less intense
MONSOON
(July to September)
The monsoon brings moderate rainfall and higher humidity. The Ganges flows fuller during this time, and while occasional showers may interrupt travel plans, the ghats and surroundings appear greener and refreshed.

Seasonal Highlights

March
Holi in Varanasi is celebrated with vibrant colours, music, and joyful gatherings along the ghats and streets.
August/September
